Expertise: Acrylic Showers
Bathroom renovations remain high on homeowners' wish lists—and it's easy to see why. A well-executed remodel not only enhances the livability of your home but also delivers a strong return on investment. While upscale materials like marble and porcelain add luxury, they often come with a hefty price tag that doesn't fit every budget or scenario.
To learn more about practical alternatives that still deliver style and value, we spoke with John Wisniewski, president of Daniel Robert Remodeling. He shares why acrylic showers are rapidly becoming the go-to solution for homeowners looking to upgrade without overspending.
Why are acrylic showers gaining popularity?
"A lot of people want the look of high-end tile or marble without committing to an $80,000 remodel," Wisniewski explains. "Acrylic showers can mimic those aesthetics at a fraction of the cost."
Wisniewski says homeowners often choose acrylic when they're working within a budget, planning to move in a few years, or remodeling a space like a kids' bathroom that may change over time. "It's a cost-effective way to achieve a beautiful look, and there's no need for grout, which makes it even more appealing."
What are the biggest misconceptions about acrylic?
Many assume acrylic is just another form of plastic, but Wisniewski is quick to correct that. "True, high-quality acrylic—specifically 100% virgin acrylic—is engineered for wet environments. It's non-porous and non-microbial, meaning mold and mildew can't grow on it," he says. "You'd never want actual plastic in a shower; it wouldn't hold up. But acrylic is a completely different, purpose-built material."
Is there a good return on investment?
Absolutely, says Wisniewski. "An acrylic shower system can last 20 to 25 years and often comes with a lifetime guarantee. It offers superior waterproofing compared to traditional tile and holds up extremely well over time. So yes, from a cost and longevity standpoint, it's a smart investment."
Can homeowners still customize their showers with acrylic?
"There's a lot of flexibility," he says. "You can choose from different design styles like subway tile, herringbone, or Calacatta marble looks. You can even mix patterns—like combining a marble base with subway tile accents—for added depth and texture. There are also various grout color options, even though it's not real grout, which means you still get that visual detail without the maintenance headache."
Functional accessories are also in high demand. "People love handheld shower wands, glass doors, built-in soap niches, corner shelves and grab bars. All of that can be incorporated into an acrylic setup."
How easy is it to maintain an acrylic shower?
"This is where acrylic really shines," says Wisniewski. "Ask anyone what they dislike about their current shower, and you'll likely hear 'cleaning grout.'
Traditional tile grout stains over time, especially when harsh cleaners are involved. With acrylic, there are no grout lines to scrub. You just wipe the surface down with an all-purpose cleaner and it stays looking great."
For homeowners looking for style, durability and value, acrylic showers offer an ideal balance. With so many customizable options and such low maintenance, it's no wonder they've become the top choice in today's bathroom remodels.
